Dynamics (2016)
This record was originally written in 2014–2016 and recorded in tandem. It was a learning curve more than anything in self-production and songwriting. It has moments on it that still really resonate with me and although I don’t expect many people to dig it, it meant a lot to me to finally finish this one. I lost the original recording sessions in a hard drive failure and it took me 10 years of bugging me to finally finish it. I recovered what I could and re-recorded parts I had lost. Its influences are fairly obvious. It has very bold strokes of emotion, up and down; hence the title.

Materia
This record is perhaps the quintessential ‘Ritual’ record. It’s where I wanted to go at the time and I found it very fun to write. It took a long time to finish as my life changed a lot over the course of the development (moving, kids, work) and I chipped away at it as and when I could. A big chunk of the material (get it?!) was my input into an old band of mine. The whole record was recorded at home except for vocals. Although I feel rather detached from the music after 1000 hours of listening, retracking and demoing for 8 years, it still has moments I enjoy. Influenced heavily by King Crimson’s Discipline.

Stories
This record was written on the sofa, late at night, trying not to wake up the kids. No amp or anything. I was really enjoying the vibe of Open A (AEAEAEB) and the songs flowed out over the course of a week in the late summer. I voice-noted the demos and it was very easy to pull the tracks together for the proper recording. A much looser and grungier version of songwriting than its predecessor, which is exactly what I wanted. It’s a rather dark, depressing and autumnal record with some lyrical themes I hadn’t explored before. A therapeutic album for me.

Eventide
I had always been in metal bands, listened to metal and as a younger version of myself, visualised myself in a very stereotypical metal ‘role’ in music. I haven’t felt that way in a while, and the more I think about it the less I feel inclined to pursue it. However, I really did want to write this record. It’s by far the heaviest thing in this phase of the series. It was written over the course of 2 weeks with a very concise vision and theme. It took on its own vibe and sound from day one. The material was written in a near continuous flow from beginning to end, with little second guessing or changes. I wanted it to be an organic machine with a vengeance. It’s not the easiest thing to listen to, but that might just be the point.
